Nighthawks Sweep Saints, Clinch Share of GNAC Regular Season Title

NAMPA, Idaho - Northwest Nazarene softball came through with a pair of hard-fought victories over a strong Saint Martin's team on Saturday by scores of 4-1 and 1-0, earning a 3-1 series win over the Saints and clinching at least a share of the GNAC Regular Season Championship.

NNU improves to 19-15 overall and 17-3 in GNAC play with just four games remaining. The only way the Nighthawks would not win the title outright would be for NNU to lose their last four games at Western Oregon and for WOU to win their last six games or SMU to win their final eight contests next week.

Game 1

SMU struck first in the opener, with a leadoff double coming around to score on a two-out single. NNU answered with two in the bottom of the first, though, as Maia McNicoll drove home Tori Hensley with a double and McNicoll then scored on an RBI single from Sidney Booth.

The Nighthawks added one more in the second, as Jami Obringer drilled an RBI triple that scored Dominique Trevino from first. Another inning later, it was Madison Felter who delivered another RBI, driving home Abigail Gagnon with a double.

The score remained 4-1 for the rest of the game, with Booth shutting down the Saints to the tune of just the one run over seven innings on five hits while striking out four. Hensley had two of the Nighthawks' eight hits.

Game 2

The Nighthawks and Saints engaged in a pitchers' duel in game two, with neither team getting on the board through the first four and a half innings. In the bottom of the fifth, it was finally NNU that broke the tie, as Clarissa Moreno hit a two-out solo homer to left that proved to be the only run of the game.

Hensley started for the Nighthawks, tossing 6.1 shutout innings with six strikeouts before Gina Skinner entered to get the final two outs in the seventh for the save.

Moreno and Hensley both had a pair of hits for NNU.

Next Up

NNU will wrap up the regular season at Western Oregon next weekend, needing just one win to clinch the GNAC regular season title and top seed in the GNAC Championships, which are set for May 4-6 in Burnaby, B.C.
