ELLENSBURG, Wash. – Northwest Nazarene women's basketball defeated Westmont 61-54 in their afternoon game on Friday.
Westmont came out of the gate swinging. They opened the game with an 11-2 run to take the early lead. The Nighthawks went on a 9-0 run to even the score at 11, but it was Westmont who held the 18-13 lead at the end of the first quarter.
In the second quarter NNU earned their first lead and outscored Westmont 12-3, shooting 3-10 from the field with one deep ball and five made free-throws. At the end of the first half, NNU led 25-21.
After some back and forth in the third quarter, the Nighthawks began to separate themselves from the Warriors with eight unanswered points to finish off the quarter.
Shawnacee Davis scored six consecutive points on her own and
Beaux Bruegman scored the final two.
The Nighthawks entered the fourth quarter with an 11-0 lead. With 2:30 remaining in the game, Westmont hit a three-point shot to come within three points of NNU at 49-46. NNU went on a small run to regain a 10-point lead. When the dust settled, the Nighthawks won 61-54.
Freshman
Kendall Clark and
Beaux Bruegman each finished the game with 13 points. Kendall also had six rebounds, second only to her sister
Emma Clark who grabbed eight boards.
The women's next game is in Nampa tomorrow when they take on the Whitworth Pirates.
