REXBURG, Idaho - Northwest Nazarene women's soccer earned a huge three points on Monday, edging out Montana State Billings 1-0 to open a crucial final week for the Nighthawks.
Â
The Nighthawks improve to 5-5-6 on the season and 3-5-4 in GNAC play with two games remaining in the regular season.
Â
The game was originally supposed to be played in Billings on Oct. 26, but snow and frigid temperatures caused postponement to this afternoon, with the teams meeting halfway in Rexburg.
Â
NNU had the advantage in run of play in the first half, recording nine shots while allowing four from MSUB. NNU also earned three corners to none for MSUB.
Â
It wasn't until early in the second half, however, that the Nighthawks broke into the scoring column first. In the 51
st minute,
Alejandra Jaramillo put NNU on the board with her second goal of the season.
Madison Grande and
Savanna Herz both notched assists on the tally.
Â
NNU's defense was stout throughout the contest, allowing just two shots on goal that were both saved by
Bailey Blancett.
Â
With the win, NNU is now up to 13 points in GNAC play, one back of MSUB at 14 and two back of Simon Fraser at 15. The Red Leafs currently hold the fourth and final spot in next week's GNAC Tournament, so the Nighthawks will need to pass both MSUB and SFU to achieve a postseason berth.
Â
Six points are up for grabs for every team with all eight GNAC squads in action on Thursday and Saturday. NNU will next play at Saint Martin's on Thursday at 1:00 p.m. Pacific before closing out the regular season at home on Saturday for Senior Day against Western Oregon.
