TURLOCK, Calif. – For the second-straight day at the Tournament of Champions, Northwest Nazarene softball struggled to get anything going on their side of the plate, scoring just one run in a pair of defeats as they fell to Cal State Monterey Bay 6-1 and Cal State San Bernardino 2-0.
Game One
The Nighthawks got the first run against the Otters, scoring in the third on an RBI single from
Emma Mulligan.
NNU would give up a pair of three-run innings before the game was over, though, coming in the fifth and the seventh, as CSUMB went on to win 6-1.
NNU had six hits, with
Sidney Booth and
Ivy Hommel accounting for four of the six with two apiece. Booth started in the circle and went 4.2 innings, allowing three runs and striking out five.
Gina Skinner pitched the final 2.1 innings, also giving up three runs with one strikeout.
Game Two
NNU had a great chance to score in the first, loading the bases with no outs, but were unable to push across any runs. The Nighthawks would put runners in scoring position in four of the seven frames, but could not pick up any timely hits as they were shut out for just the second time all season.
Cal State San Bernardino scored their two runs with one swing in the fourth, an RBI double with two outs.
Booth went the distance in the game, allowing the two runs on four hits while striking out nine.
NNU managed five hits, with two coming from
Charlotte Forniss and one apiece from Hommel,
Tori Hensley, and
Abigail Gagnon.
Next Up
The Nighthawks will be on the road next weekend, visiting Montana State Billings for four games on Friday and Saturday, April 8 and 9.
