COEUR d'ALENE, Idaho - Northwest Nazarene women's golf held steady on day two of the GNAC Championships, finishing in third place out of the five conference teams.
The Nighthawks totaled a 638 through the two rounds, shooting a 317 in round one and then slightly higher with a 321 in round two. Western Washington pulled away from Simon Fraser down the stretch to win the conference title, finishing at a 615 while SFU ended with a 625. Montana State Billings (663) and Saint Martin's (673) rounded out the field.
"Yesterday the conditions were cold but the wind stayed down and made it nice," remarked head coach
Craig Stensgaard. "Today was another story, we got hit pretty hard with the wind and it was tough scoring. Even with that, the ladies played well and gave it a good battle. I was proud of our team consistency in both the good and hard conditions."
Playing in her final collegiate event, senior
Hannah Holloway led the Nighthawks with a 158, tying for eighth overall after rounds of 77 and 81. The 77 on day one was the low round of the tournament for NNU.Â
The four scoring Nighthawks were each just one stroke behind one another, with
Madison Gridley ninth at 159,
Brianna Shervik 10th at 160, and
Christine Cho 11th at 161.
Paige Vancil rounded out the group with a 174, but improved by eight strokes on day two including an eagle on Hole 17.
"Highlights included Paige making an Eagle today and having Hannah, Madi and Brianna all in the top 10, and Christine right behind them in 11th," added Stensgaard.
With the GNAC Championships marking his final event as the NNUÂ Head Golf Coach,
Stensgaard will step away from his duties as the longest-tenured coach across any sport in Northwest Nazarene University history, wrapping up 23 years directing the golf program.
