NNU Takes Final Game of Concordia Kickoff Classic

IRVINE, Calif. – Northwest Nazarene softball earned their first victory of the 2022 season with a 7-2 win over Sonoma State, finishing the Concordia Kickoff Classic with a split on the final day after a 2-1 loss to Hawaii Pacific.

How It Happened

  • Game One was scoreless for the first four innings, with NNU starter Charlotte Forniss and HPU starter Taylor Thompson matching zeros on the scoreboard.
  • NNU got on the board first in the top of the fifth, as Forniss helped her own cause with an RBI double to score Abigail Gagnon.
  • HPU rallied for two runs in the bottom of the sixth, though, and took the game by that final score of 2-1.
  • Game Two went back and forth to start, with NNU emerging with a 3-2 lead over Sonoma State after three innings.
  • The Nighthawks broke the game open with four runs in the fifth, starting with a Madison Felter RBI single. Nicole Zuvela then drew a bases-loaded walk, Emma Mulligan hit a sacrifice fly, and Sidney Booth was hit by a pitch with the bases loaded to make it 7-2 Nighthawks.
  • Booth took care of business from there in the circle, blanking SSU in the final two frames to preserve the win.

Nighthawks Notes

  • NNU moves to 1-4 on the season as they conclude their time in Irvine.
  • In game one, Forniss went 5.2 innings and allowed just one run on three hits.
  • The Nighthawks had four hits in the first game, with a different player recording each.
  • In game two, Booth went the distance in the circle, tossing a complete game two-hitter with six strikeouts.
  • Booth was also 2-3 from the plate with three RBI in game two, while Maia McNicoll and Mackenzie La Neve each had two hits as well.
  • NNU didn't commit any errors in the second game, the first time through five games this year to do so.
