IRVINE, Calif. – Northwest Nazarene softball came incredibly close to earning a significant win on Friday afternoon, but fell in the final moments 2-1 to No. 10 Concordia in their second game of the Concordia Kickoff Classic.
How It Happened
- The Nighthawks got on the board immediately, putting across their first run of 2022 in the top of the first. Ivy Hommel walked with one out and then scored all the way from first on a two-out double to the wall in center field by Sidney Booth.
- Concordia bounced back to tie it in the bottom of the third, however, scraping together an unearned run on one hit and an error.
- NNU put two runners on in both the fifth and seventh innings but could not push another run across. In the fifth, the two runners advanced to second and third with no outs, but three straight strikeouts ended the threat.
- In the bottom of the seventh, the first two Concordia hitters were retired by starter Sidney Booth before a walk and a single to right put runners on first and third with two outs. The Eagles then walked it off with a single to right field, just under the diving glove of Mackenzie La Neve.
Nighthawks Notes
- NNU falls to 0-2 after the first two games of the year, both coming against top 10 teams in the nation.
- Sidney Booth had another great outing on the mound, allowing just one earned run in 6 2/3 innings, striking out seven and walking three.
- The Nighthawks had just three hits, with Booth, Tori Hensley, and Abigail Gagnon all reaching safely. Hensley also drew one of NNU's four walks.
