NAMPA, Idaho -
McKenzie Buell's 90th minute goal was the difference on Saturday as Northwest Nazarene women's soccer knocked off local rival College of Idaho 1-0.
NNU and C of I battled through a scoreless draw over the first 89 minutes of action, with both teams drawing multiple chances but unable to find the net. Finally, with the clock running out Buell was able to capitalize on a defensive miscue by the Yotes, beat one defender, and fire a strike past the keeper with just 20 seconds remaining.Â
The victory runs the Nighthawks' win streak to 13 matches dating back to the spring as NNU improves to 2-0-0 on the new season. C of I falls to 1-2-0 on the year.
Alexis Montoya came up big in goal for the Nighthawks, recording seven saves during her clean sheet to pic up her second win of the year.Â
Chances were nearly even in the match, with NNU holding a slight 18-17 advantage in shots and the Yotes placing seven shots on frame compared to six for the Nighthawks. NNU took the corners advantage, earning nine to C of I's six, and the possession battle (56% to 44%).Â
Madison Grande (five) and
Ashley Parton (four) combined for half of NNU's total shot attempts. Buell had two attempts, converting the final one, and was joined by
Jade Zimmer and
Olivia Wicks with two shots each as well.Â
The women will now trade places with the men's team and visit Salt Lake City for a pair of games, taking on Colorado Mesa in a neutral-site match next Thursday before facing host Westminster on Saturday.
