NNU Settles for Series Split with Biola

NAMPA, Idaho – For the second-straight day, Northwest Nazarene baseball split a doubleheader with Biola with a 14-4 loss in game one and a 9-7 win in game two.

No. 6 NNU (29-7) will now return to conference play next weekend, closing out the regular season at Western Oregon. After that, the GNAC Championships will be held here in Nampa on May 20 and 21.

Game One: Biola 14, NNU 4

The Nighthawks struggled to get much going off of Biola starter Andrew Beauvais over the first six innings, and trailed 9-0 heading into the seventh.

NNU then put together a bit of a rally, though, loading the bases with no outs on two hit-by-pitches and a Walker Moore infield single. Ryan Dearing brought home the first run with a sacrifice fly, and two batters later Shawn Grandmont blasted a three-run homer to dead center field to cut the deficit to five.

That was all the Nighthawks would manage offensively, though, as Biola added five more runs before the game was over to take the 14-4 victory.

Grandmont finished 3-4 with a run scored and three RBI, notching half of NNU's six hits in the game.

Game Two: NNU 9, Biola 7

Biola came out strong in game two as well, scoring three times off NNU starter Shane Martin in the top of the first. Martin settled down from there, though, not allowing a run over the next 3.1 innings before being replaced by Blake McFadden in the fifth.

By that time, the Nighthawks had developed a healthy lead, scoring one each in the first and second innings before a seven-spot in the third. Cody Nisbet brought home the first run of the third inning with a bases-loaded single, before two runs would trot home on back-to-back balks by Biola's pitcher.

Walker Moore then doubled home Nisbet, followed by an RBI single from Dearing and a two-run single from Grant Kerry to make it 9-3.

The Eagles hit a pair of homers over the final two innings, cutting the deficit to two, but the Nighthawks held on for the two-run victory.

Martin earned the victory, improving to 4-1 on the year with eight strikeouts over his 4.1 innings on the mound. McFadden gave up just a run in 1.2 innings of relief, followed by Max Holtzclaw closing out the top of the seventh.

Kerry, Nisbet, and Moore each had two hits for NNU, with Moore and Kerry both notching a pair of RBI.
