NAMPA, Idaho – Northwest Nazarene baseball earned their ninth and 10
th-straight victories on Monday, finishing the first game with a final of 16-5 before taking game two 6-2.
The ninth-ranked Nighthawks have now swept their last two GNAC series, improving to an incredible 21-3 in the conference and 27-5 overall.
NNU will have a series away from conference competition this Thursday and Friday when they welcome Biola to Elmore Vail Field for four games. After that, the Nighthawks will head to Western Oregon to close the regular season.
Game One: NNU 16, SMU 6
It may have taken two days, but NNU was able to take game three of the series over SMU with ease. On Saturday, the game had to be put on hold between the seventh and eighth innings due to rain from a thunderstorm and was resumed on Monday afternoon.
NNU jumped on SMU early, scoring twice in the first, three times in the second, and four times in the third to take a 9-0 lead. The Saints responded with a strong fifth inning, scoring five times to cut the deficit to four.
SMU tacked on another run in the top of the seventh, but a five-spot by the Nighthawks in the bottom of the inning put the game away. Once play resumed on Monday, NNU scored two more times in the eighth before taking the 10-run victory.
Three Nighthawks had three hits, including
Grant Kerry (3-6 with 4 RBI),
Colton Moore (3-5 with a homer and 3 RBI), and
Ryan Dearing (3-6 with 2 RBI and four runs scored).
Haden Keller and
John Gonzalez each added two hits, with Gonzalez and
Walker Moore both drilling home runs.
Spencer Schwehr got the start for NNU, going 4.2 innings and allowing five runs on six hits.
Nick Irwin went 2.1 innings in relief, allowing just one run with three strikeouts.
Shane Martin took over to start the eighth on Monday, tossing two shutout innings with three strikeouts to earn the win.
Game Two: NNU 6, SMU 2
Game two started as a pitcher's duel between SMU's Alcos and NNU's
Joseph Ihli, with neither allowing a run through the first three innings. The Saints got on the board first, hitting a solo homer in the top of the fourth.
A six-run fifth for the Nighthawks would prove to be the difference, though, as NNU was finally able to get to Alcos and chase him from the game. NNU got just two hits in the inning, but an error and five walks led to 11 Nighthawks coming to the plate and six runs coming across.
SMU got one back in the sixth, but that was as close as they would come.
Ihli went 3.2 innings and received a no-decision, allowing three runs (one earned) on three hits with three strikeouts.
Blake McFadden tossed a scoreless 1.1 innings with two strikeouts and earned the victory, while
Max Holtzclaw threw the final two innings and struck out five.
