BILLINGS, Mont. - Northwest Nazarene baseball simply has Montana State Billings' number this season, as the Nighthawks defeated the Yellowjackets two more times on Saturday to make it a perfect 8-0 against MSUB on the year.
NNU's wins came by scores of 9-5 and 10-5, making it six of eight games against MSUB that NNU scored nine or more runs. NNU is now 23-5 on the season and 17-3 in GNAC play.
The 10th-ranked Nighthawks now have next weekend off after the series with CWU was canceled, and will next host Saint Martin's for four games on April 30 and May 1.
Game One: NNU 9, MSUB 5
NNU got on the board first in game one with
Colton Moore launching a two-run homer in the top of the first. MSUB came back to take a 4-2 lead in the next few innings, but
Grant Kerry cut that deficit in half with a solo shot in the third.
Ryan Dearing then tied things up a four in the fourth inning with an RBI single. The Nighthawks finally took the lead back in the fifth as
Quentin Ayers blasted a three-run shot to left to make it 7-4. MSUB got a run back in the bottom of the inning, but that was all they would manage the rest of the game, with Kerry adding two more insurance runs on a homer in the eighth to bring the final score to 9-5.
Blake McFadden ended up as the pitcher of record for NNU, improving to 3-0 on the year after pitching 2.2 innings of scoreless relief, allowing just two hits and striking out five.
Max Holtzclaw worked the final 1.1 innings for the save, striking out three while not allowing a hit.
Game Two: NNU 10, MSUB 5
MSUB jumped out to an early lead again in game two, this time 3-0 after three first inning runs. NNU quickly made up that deficit, though, scoring two in the second before a seven-run third inning.
The seven-run outburst consisted of a two-RBI single from
Haden Keller, an RBI double by
Walker Moore, Keller coming across on a wild pitch,
Cody Nisbet and
Walker Moore scoring on an error, and finally
Ryan Dearing sprinting home on a sacrifice fly from
Shawn Grandmont.
Nisbet added an RBI double in the sixth, and it would be more than enough as NNU went on to take a 10-5 win.
Spencer Schwehr got the win, going 5.2 innings and allowing five runs while striking out four.
Ty Hueckman and
Joseph Ihli combined to finish the final 1.1 innings for the Nighthawks without allowing a run.
