NAMPA, Idaho - No. 19 Northwest Nazarene baseball continued their torrid start to the season with two more wins over Montana State Billings on Saturday, 21-10 and 11-6.
In all over the weekend, the Nighthawks outscored the Yellowjackets 58 to 29 as they swept aside MSUB to open conference play. NNU is now 10-2 on the season.
NNU will be back home next weekend, hosting Central Washington for four games on Friday and Saturday.
Game One: NNU 21, MSUB 10
For the second day in a row, the Nighthawks put up over 20 runs in a game as they tallied 21 runs on 16 hits. NNU scored in every inning but the seventh, putting up crooked numbers of seven runs in the fifth and five runs in the sixth.
Colton Moore and
Shawn Grandmont led the high-flying offense, as Grandmont hit a pair of three-run homers and Moore went 4-5 with four RBI and five runs scored.
Kyle Payne also launched a three-run homer, while
John Gonzalez and
Grant Kerry each added two RBI for the Nighthawks.
Shane Martin earned the win on the mound, getting the start and going six innings while allowing three runs.Â
Game Two: NNU 11, MSUB 6
NNU took a 1-0 lead through the first two innings of game two, but then blew the game wide open with nine runs in the third. The first two runs came in on bases-loaded walks, before
Isaac Hines,
Cody Nisbet, and
Colton Moore all recorded two-RBI hits. Grandmont added the ninth run with an RBI single to score Moore.
Cameron Duke added NNU's final run in the fourth in an RBI double, putting the Nighthawks up 11-0.
MSUB battled back with six runs in the fifth and sixth innings, but
Max Holtzclaw came in for the final four outs and slammed the door on the Yellowjackets, striking out three without allowing a baserunner.
