Nighthawks Upend Sea Lions to Open Road Trip

SAN DIEGO, Calif. – Northwest Nazarene women's basketball earned a solid victory on Friday with a road win over Point Loma Nazarene, 71-64.

How It Happened
  • Both teams struggled offensively out of the gate, each managing just seven points in the first quarter.
  • NNU was able to pull away slightly in the second quarter, taking a six-point lead on a pair of Clare Eubanks free throws with just under a minute remaining. Point Loma made a three with just 13 seconds to play, though, cutting the Nighthawk lead in half at the break, 27-24.
  • The Nighthawks led throughout the third period as well, opening a nine-point lead at the 3:38 mark but again having the Sea Lions climb back to make it a three-point game, 45-42, heading into the final stanza.
  • The Sea Lions tied things up at 50 midway through the quarter, but then a 15-5 NNU run over the next four minutes put the game out of reach as NNU cruised to a 71-64 win.
Nighthawks Notes
  • With their third-straight win, NNU improves to 3-2 on the year, while PLNU falls to 3-2.
  • The victory avenges a 78-75 defeat at the hands of the Sea Lions in San Diego early last year.
  • Lydia Nieto and Ashlynn Sylve led the Nighthawks with 11 points apiece and four rebounds apiece. Nieto was 8-10 from the free throw line.
  • Teagan Thurman dominated the glass with 10 rebounds to go with six points.
  • The Nighthawks had a significant advantage in points in the paint, 36-20, and fast break points, 18-4.
