NNU Completes Sweep of Western New Mexico

NAMPA, Idaho - It can be really hard to defeat the same team three times in a row, much less three nights in a row, but that is exactly what Northwest Nazarene men's basketball accomplished this week with back-to-back-to-back victories over Western New Mexico, culminating tonight with a 75-64 win.

Adding that to a 68-59 win on Thursday and a 69-54 victory on Friday, the Nighthawks now improve to 6-1 on the year.

WNMU went down fighting in the final contest, keeping it close for most of the game before NNU pulled away at the end. The final numbers were very even across the board, with the lone exception coming at the charity stripe. The Nighthawks went a perfect 15-of-15 from the line, with 14 of those coming in the second half, while the Mustangs finished just 5-of-9.

Ezekiel Alley led NNU with 16 points and eight assists, while James Nelson also narrowly missed a double-double with 15 points and eight rebounds. Kobe Terashima and George Reidy both finished with 11 points, and Gabriel Murphy rounded out five double-digit scorers with 10 points on the night. Terashima also added seven assists.

Alley got the offense going right away, draining a triple on the Nighthawks' first possession. The senior went on to score or assist on NNU's first 10 points, building a 10-6 lead at the first media timeout.

Western New Mexico bounced back quickly, though, going on a 17-5 run over the next eight minutes to take their largest lead of the game, 23-15, with 7:09 to go in the first half. NNU had another run in them before the break, however, as a Terashima jumper with 1:16 remaining evened the score at 27. The teams traded three-pointers in the final minute, and went into halftime tied at 30.

The first five minutes of the second period swayed back and forth, until WNMU held a one-point advantage, 43-42, at the 15:02 mark. The Nighthawks proceeded to go on a 9-0 run over the next three minutes, as Nelson drained a three and notched a layup, Tru Allen spun in a highlight-reel reverse, and Christian Rose jammed home a monster dunk with two hands.

That run would prove to be the difference, as the Nighthawks slowly built their lead up to 12 on a Terashima triple with 4:38 left. Perfect free throw shooting down the stretch sealed the victory, as NNU came out on top by a final of 74-65.

The Nighthawks will now hit the road again, visiting Saint Martin's for a pair of games on Friday, Jan. 29 and Saturday, Jan. 30.
