Jonathan Ringer can walk out the backdoor of his house in Darby, Mont., and fish the Bitterroot River.
To say he is an avid fisherman would be an understatement.
Now, the Northwest Nazarene senior baseball player is taking his love of fishing to a new level.
This summer he plans to head to Alaska to work for a fishing charter boat.
"I have a family friend who did it last year and was telling me about it," Ringer said. "It sounded like something I'd really like to do. With everything that is going on, there will never be a better opportunity for me to try this out and get some new experiences."
Ringer's senior season was cut short as the COVID-19 pandemic canceled spring sports. The Nighthawks were 7-1 in Great Northwest Athletic Conference play and were primed for a run at the conference title.
Ringer is turning down the opportunity to come back to NNU next year after the NCAA ruled that all spring sports seniors have the option of an extra year of eligibility.
The accounting major plans to pursue a job in that field instead of returning to play more baseball.
"Baseball was a major part of my life growing up and it's going to be strange not having it, but I've gotten so many memories out of it," he said. "I've learned so many things about myself through baseball. College baseball was the biggest time for that kind of growth and that is what I'm taking away from it."
Ringer isn't sure what type of accounting he wants to do eventually, but is open to whatever and hopes to experience different business types through internships. First, though, he is going to hit the high seas in Alaska.
"I had applied for a bunch of different internships this summer, but that's not really going on now," he said. "I've never been to Alaska and I don't have much sea fishing experience, so that will be new."
