NNU swept by No. 3 Colorado Mesa

GRAND JUNCTION, Colo. – The Northwest Nazarene baseball team was swept Friday by No. 3 Colorado Mesa in a nonconference doubleheader.

The Mavericks won the opener 10-8 and the nightcap 10-1.

In the opener, NNU (1-6 overall) fell behind 7-0 in the third inning before rallying to tie the game at 8-8 in the seventh.

Haden Keller hit a three-run triple in the fourth and a run-scoring single in the sixth to make it 8-4. Quentin Ayers then hit a two-run single, Alex Salsman had a run-scoring double and then Keller scored on a balk to tie the game.

"We showed some resiliency by combing back and tying it up late in the first game," NNU coach Joe Schaefer said. "Brennan Patterson threw very well out of the pen."

Patterson allowed three runs on five hits with one walk and five strikeouts in six innings of relief. Starter Ty Hueckman allowed seven runs on nine hits in two innings.

Keller finished 2-for-4 with four RBIs, Shawn Grandmont was 3-for-5 with two runs scored and Ayers was 1-for-4 with two runs and two RBIs.

In the nightcap, starter Blake McFadden allowed seven runs on seven hits in four innings to take the loss.

Ryan Dearing was 2-for-4 with a run, Parker Price had an RBI and Thomas Parker a double.

"CMU is a very good team and they exposed some things that we need to get better at," Schaefer said. "They hammer all of our mistake pitches and they do a really good job on the mound.

"We are taking too many fastballs in hitting counts and striking out too often, but these things will improve. I'm just glad they are getting shown to us now."

The teams wrap up their four-game series with a single game at 1 p.m. Saturday.
