ANCHORAGE, Alaska – The Northwest Nazarene men's basketball team lost 90-89 in overtime Thursday at Alaska Anchorage in Great Northwest Athletic Conference action.
The Nighthawks had a chance to win the game at the end of regulation, but
Jayden Bezzant was called for traveling as his feet got tangled with a defender in the paint.
"I should've done a better job of putting our guys into a position to win the game," NNU coach
Paul Rush said. "Our guys started out really locked in and played well, but we didn't finish as strong as we needed to rebounding and taking shots away inside."
The loss puts the Nighthawks (12-8 overall, 9-6 GNAC) into a four-way tie for second place in the conference with five games to play. Three more teams are within two games of the logjam. The top six make the conference tournament.
In overtime, the teams traded baskets and were tied at 87-87 with 2 minutes, 6 seconds left. After a pair of missed free throws by
Olamilekan Adetunji, Anchorage's Oggie Pantovic drilled a 3-pointer for a 90-87 lead with 20 seconds left.
Ezekiel Alley then missed a 3-pointer, but Adetunji got an offensive rebound and was fouled. He made the first and tried to purposely miss the second, but banked it in to make it 90-89 with 2.5 seconds left.
Anchorage then threw a baseball pass long and Pantovic was fouled with 1.9 left. He airballed the free throw, giving NNU a final chance. But the Nighthawks' attempt at a long pass was broken up and the Seawolves hung on.
NNU has a short turnaround playing at Alaska at 4 p.m. MST on Saturday.
"This group is awesome and I really believe in their ability to get ready for that game," Rush said. "It will be a tough thing to do, but they have the capacity to do that."
NNU led 83-81 with 15 seconds left in regulation and Anchorage had the ball. After nine seconds ran off, the Nighthawks fouled guard Tyrus Hosley with 6.1 to go. He calmly sank both ends of the one-and-one.
Bezzant finished with 25 points and seven assists. Alley added 18 points, five rebounds and four assists, Adetunji had 14 points and 11 rebounds for his fifth double-double of the season,
Sam Roth had 11 points and
Jaylen Fox had 10 points and four assists.
Pantovic finished with 26 points and 15 rebounds for the Seawolves (15-11, 8-7), recording his seventh double-double of the season.
