BURNABY, B.C. – The Northwest Nazarene volleyball team struggled to finish sets Saturday and it cost them in a Great Northwest Athletic Conference loss to Simon Fraser.
After rallying to win the first set, the Nighthawks let a late lead in the second set get away and then couldn't scratch out any more wins in the 23-25, 25-22, 25-20, 25-23 loss.
"We had chances to win every set and couldn't pull it out," NNU coach
Doug English said. "This was a tough road trip, but we competed really well all weekend. We are excited to be home next week and show our home fans how much we have grown since last season."
In the opening set, the Nighthawks (4-5 overall, 0-2 GNAC) trailed 22-19 but scored five consecutive points and eventually finished off the 25-23 win.
In the second set, they carried that momentum and eventually led 22-20 but gave up five consecutive points to lose 25-22.
The third set was a back-and-forth affair with the Nighthawks tying it at 17-17, but they couldn't find a way to get past the Clan (5-5, 1-1) in the end.
The fourth set was again tight, but after taking a 22-21 lead and tying the match at 23-23 NNU dropped its second consecutive GNAC match.
Natalie Sullivan's 12 kills, nine digs and .310 hitting percentage led the Nighthawks.
Brooke Foster added nine kills and 10 digs,
Tayler Markland had eight kills and
Abbey Blum had nine kills and nine digs.
Caroline McMahon had 13 digs,
Kayla Sale had nine and
Megan Nelson had 35 assists and five digs.
The Nighthawks will finally make their home debut at 7 p.m. Thursday against Saint Martin's.
