NAMPA, Idaho – The Northwest Nazarene softball team was swept by Central Washington on Saturday in a pair of Great Northwest Athletic Conference games.
NNU lost 10-9 in the opener, committing three errors in the seventh to allow the game-winning run to score. The Nighthawks lost 10-4 in the nightcap.
Central Washington was the home team in both games despite the contests being played in Nampa because they had been scheduled to be in Washington but snow on the field moved the games.
In the opener, the Nighthawks rallied from deficits of 4-2 and 9-6.
Trailing by two in the top of the six, the Nighthawks scored four runs as
Cassidy Fifield blasted a three-run home run for a 6-4 lead.
The Wildcats responded with five in the bottom of the sixth to take a 9-6 lead into the final inning.
In the top of the seventh,
Madison Strickler hit an RBI single and
Ivy Hommel added a two-run single to tie the game.
After Fifield popped out,
Kylie Orr came up to bat and hit a two-run double to right field. Unfortunately, because of a mistake Orr was charged with batting out of order, the run was negated and Orr was called out. When she was pinch run for earlier in the game, the coaching staff forgot to tell the umpire that she was being reinserted.
"Game 1 was a tough loss," NNU coach
Rich Wagner said. "The girls deserved to win and because of a coaching mistake that got taken away."
The game headed to the seventh and the Nighthawks made three errors to allow the game-winning run to score.
Anna Williams was 3-for-3 with three runs scored and a home run,
Brittany Genuardi was 2-for-4 with two RBIs, Strickler was 3-for-4 with two runs scored and Hommel was 3-for-4 with two RBIs.
"We did a great job at the plate today," Wagner said. "The girls have been working hard on their swings and it paid off."
In the nightcap, Genuardi hit a solo homer in the second and a three-run shot in the third to give NNU a 4-1 lead.
The Wildcats immediately battled back, though, scoring once in the third and three times in the fourth to take a 5-4 lead.
"Day two of the four-game set is really tough on pitching and that showed today," Wagner said. "When hitters at this level get to see pitchers two days in a row, it's tough to get outs. We will regroup and come out swinging on Friday."
Genuardi was 3-for-3 with four RBIs.
NNU hosts Concordia in a pair of doubleheaders next weekend. Friday's games start at 1 p.m. while Saturday's are at 12 p.m.
