NNU softball swept in GNAC openers

NAMPA, Idaho – The Northwest Nazarene softball team was swept in its GNAC opening doubleheader Friday by Central Washington.

The Wildcats won the opener 2-1 and the nightcap 9-6. The games were supposed to be played in Ellensburg, Wash., but snow on the field moved them to Nampa. Central was the home team in both games.

"The first game was a matchup with last year's two best conference pitchers," NNU coach Rich Wagner said. "One or two plays are going to decide the outcome of that matchup and those plays didn't go our way.

"Game two, we let one inning get away from us and it proved to be a little too much to overcome."

In the opener, Anna Olson drove in Madison Strickler for the Nighthawks lone run. Jordan Adams suffered the hard luck loss, allowing two runs on six hits with no walks and four strikeouts.

In the nightcap, NNU (10-8 overall, 0-2 GNAC) jumped out to a 3-0 lead in the first inning on sacrifice fly by Kylie Orr and a single by Shelbie Martinez. But the Wildcats answered with four in the bottom half of the inning. Central added four more in the third for a 7-2 lead.

But the Nighthawks didn't roll over, scoring one in the fourth and three more in the sixth.

Ivy Hommel singled in a run and Anna Williams hit a three-run homer.

"This team proved again the game is never over until the final out," Wagner said. "We continue to fight no matter what the score is. We will make some adjustments and come back ready to compete tomorrow."

The teams have another doubleheader at 12 p.m. MST on Saturday.
