PORTLAND, Ore. – Northwest Nazarene junior
Adonis Arms was named the Great Northwest Athletic Conference Men's Basketball Player of the Year on Tuesday.
Arms, who is enjoying one of the best seasons in recent memory for the Nighthawks, was also named the GNAC Newcomer of the Year.
"I'm happy. Really happy. This is insane," he said. "I've never gotten a player of the year or newcomer of the year or an award like that before, so this is a big thing.
"I want to thank my coaches and my teammates. I want to thank my mom and my sister for trusting me and believing in my abilities to play this game and go to a different world basically. I want to thank NNU for giving me the opportunity to wear their jersey and I want to thank God, because none of this would be possible without him."
Arms is the first man or women to win the GNAC Player of the Year award in NNU program history.
The NNU men's basketball team finished the regular season third in the GNAC and will play No. 6 seed Simon Fraser at 5:15 p.m. PST on Thursday at Western Washington in the first round of the conference tournament.
He was joined on the first team by senior point guard
Obi Megwa, who was a unanimous selection. Junior guard
Jayden Bezzant was named honorable mention.
Arms ranks first in scoring in the GNAC at 20.9 per game, he is second in steals at 2.0, seventh in assists at 3.3, eighth in field goal percentage at 56 percent, 10th in blocked shots at 0.9 and 15th in rebounding at 5.5.
"Adonis is an incredibly talented player, who has done an amazing job consistently night in and night out being a weapon offensively both scoring and passing the ball," NNU head coach
Paul Rush said. "His length defensively can be really disruptive and it is exciting to think about him continuing to develop and mature as a basketball player. His ceiling is very high."
Megwa is second in the GNAC in scoring at 19.2 per game and has three 30-point games this season. Bezzant is averaging 12.8 points a game which is 18th in the league. He had a career high 30 points in NNU's 27-point rally at Montana State Billings.
Saint Martin's Alex Pribble was named coach of the year after leading the Saints to their first GNAC title. Montana State Billings' Brendan Howard is the freshman of the year and Saint Martin's Jordan Kitchen is the defensive player of the year.
