Nighthawks lose Hommel, split with Clan

BURNABY, B.C. – The Northwest Nazarene softball team split with Simon Fraser on Friday, winning the opener 3-2 before falling 7-5 in the nightcap.

Anna Williams and Kylie Orr hit back-to-back home runs in the second inning of the opener to give ace Jordan Adams a 3-1 lead.

Adams made it stand up, striking out five in seven solid innings to move to 8-3 on the season.

NNU (14-12 overall, 4-6 GNAC) lost starting first baseman Ivy Hommel in a collision in the bottom of the first, forcing Orr into the field for the first time this season.

"Ivy going down really sparked our girls to rally around each other," NNU coach Rich Wagner said. "We did a great job playing as a team today."

Williams finished 2-for-2 with a home run and two RBIs and two walks, while Brittany Genuardi added a double.

In the nightcap, the Nighthawks led 3-0 heading into the bottom of the second when the Clan (6-10, 1-9) scored five runs. NNU tied it in the top of the sixth on a two-run double by Anna Olson, but Amanda Janes hit a walk-off two-run home run in the bottom of the seventh.

"As a team, we need to win more game-changing plays tomorrow and do a better job scoring with two outs," Wagner said. "We ran ourselves out of a couple innings on the bases and that hurt us in Game 2. We will make some adjustments and come out tomorrow looking to get better."

Orr was 3-for-4 with a double, while Olson was 2-for-2 with a double and Anna Williams added an RBI double. Abigail Otto hit a solo home run and was 2-for-4 with two runs.
