BURNABY, B.C. –
Jordan Adams started Saturday's doubleheader and she finished it.
In between, her Northwest Nazarene softball team earned a pair of victories to sweep Simon Fraser and get to .500 in conference play on the season.
"We did a good job winning the game-changing plays today," NNU coach
Rich Wagner said. "As a team, we played all facets of the game well. Today was another step in the right direction."
The Nighthawks won the opener 7-3 as Adams threw a complete game, striking out five to earn the win. NNU then used a five-run sixth inning to rally for a 7-5 win in the nightcap with Adams recording the final five outs for the save. She also earned a win Friday and pitched 15 2/3 innings on the weekend.
In the opener,
Anna Williams hit a grand slam in the second inning, while
Kylie Orr,
Brittany Genuardi and
Shelbie Martinez all added run-scoring singles.
"The girls did a great job making adjustments are the plate all day," Wagner said. "We limited free bases in the circle and defensively."
Williams finished 4-for-5 with two runs, four RBIs, a double and the home run.
Cassidy Fifield was 4-for-5 with a run scored and a double, while Genuardi was 2-for-5 and
Abigail Otto was 2-for-3.
In the nightcap, the Nighthawks (16-12 overall, 6-6 GNAC) trailed 2-1 headed to the sixth inning. Fifield hit a leadoff double and Orr homered to make it 3-2. Genuardi then homered to make it 4-2 and Martinez, Otto and
Madison Strickler all singled to load the bases with no outs.
Rae Young hit an infield single to score a run and
Anna Olson had a run-scoring groundout.
In the bottom half, Simon Fraser (6-12, 1-11) had one run across and runners at the corners when Wagner went to Adams. She gave up a run on a passed ball, but induced a popout to get out of trouble.
After an Otto run-scoring single in the top of the seventh, Adams worked in and out of trouble to get the save.
Simon Fraser loaded the bases with one out, trailing by two, but Adams recorded a strikeout and snared a grounder back to the circle to end the game.
Rylee Thomas (3-4) earned the win, allowing four runs – three earned – on 10 hits with no walks and two strikeouts.
Otto finished 3-for-4 with an RBI, Orr was 2-for-4 with three RBIs, Genuardi was 2-for-4, Young was 2-for-3 with an RBI and Williams was 1-for-2 with a walk, a double and a stolen base.
"As a team, we strung a lot of hits together and that is usually a recipe for offensive success," Wagner said.
NNU heads to the Tournament of Champions in Turlock, Calif., next weekend for five games.
