NNU softball splits with Saint Martin's

NAMPA, Idaho – The Northwest Nazarene softball team split with Concordia on Saturday in a Great Northwest Athletic Conference doubleheader.

Madison Strickler hit a walk-off single to help the Nighthawks win the opener 6-5 before they fell 8-2 in the nightcap.

"Game 1 was fun to watch," NNU coach Rich Wagner said. "The girls battled and pulled out the win. We are doing a good job improving every day and ever game.

"In Game 2, we battled at the plate, but they did a good job in the circle keeping us off balance. We need to do a better job in the circle working ahead and eliminating that one big inning."

In the opener, NNU (13-11 overall, 3-5 GNAC) led throughout but an error led to two unearned runs and a 5-4 deficit heading into the bottom of the seventh.

In the Nighthawks' half of the inning, Anna Williams and Kylie Orr hit leadoff singles, Brittany Genuardi singled and Abi Otto hit a sacrifice fly to tie the game. Strickler then drove in the winning run.

Jordan Adams got the win, allowing five runs – three earned – on eight hits with one walk and nine strikeouts to move to 7-3 on the season.

Orr was 3-for-4 with two runs scored, Cassidy Fifield was 2-for-4 with two RBIs, a double and a triple, Williams was 2-for-4 with an RBI, Strickler had two hits and Ivy Hommel was 2-for-3 with a double.

In the nightcap, Concordia scored five times in the top of the second and NNU never threatened after that.

Maia McNicoll suffered the loss, while Williams was 2-for-3 with a run scored and Genuardi hit a sacrifice fly.

"We will work hard in practice this week to continue to make the adjustments needed," Wagner said. "The girls played well this weekend and winning three out of four shows their hard work is paying off."

NNU plays at Simon Fraser with doubleheaders both Friday and Saturday.
