Nighthawks earn first playoff berth in four years

NAMPA, Idaho – Obi Megwa scored a career-high 34 points, Sam Roth had his best offensive performance of the season and Adonis Arms played through a knee injury as the Northwest Nazarene men's basketball team earned its first playoff berth in four years.

The Nighthawks rolled Alaska 104-75 to sew up a spot in the Great Northwest Athletic Conference tournament, which will be held March 7-9 at Western Washington.

"It's amazing," Megwa said. "I think this team is built off of chemistry and I think if we keep going, we can win the whole thing."

NNU (18-4 overall, 13-3 GNAC) last made the conference tournament in 2014-15, losing in the semifinals. The Nighthawks also went in 2010-11. Neither team made the national tournament and every victory from here on out puts NNU in better position to do that.

"Clinching the playoffs is working toward the goals we want to achieve," NNU coach Paul Rush said. "It is a big deal for us. It hasn't been done in a long time and it hasn't been done very often, so it is exciting to clinch that."

A big reason why was another monster performance from Megwa, who scored 23 points in the win Thursday against Anchorage.

Megwa had 15 points in the first half and 19 in the second half, missing just one shot in the final 20 minutes. He was put back into the game with 90 seconds left needing one point to tie his previous career high of 33 points set on Dec. 19 in a loss at Metro State Denver.

"I was wondering why he was putting me back in," Megwa said of his coach. "It was a big week. There was just a little excitement from my birthday and my teammates were giving me confidence."

Roth also picked up a lot of confidence with his performance. He scored a career-high 20 points on 8-of-9 shooting and pulled down seven rebounds. Roth has struggled at times offensively this season, but he caught fire Saturday.

"With AD (Arms) being hurt, I had the mindset to score a little more," Roth said, "but my game is to take what the defense gives me and it kind of fell into my hands. It's a confidence booster for sure. I felt it tonight a little more."

As a team, the Nighthawks shot 56.3 percent from the field (40-of-71), while holding Alaska (5-18, 2-14) to 40.3 percent (25-of-62).

Jayden Bezzant scored 13 points, Arms had 11 points and four assists, Olamilekan Adetunji had five points and 10 rebounds, James Nelson had 10 points and Adalberto Diaz had nine points and four rebounds.

NNU remains in second place in the GNAC with four games to play in the regular season. The Nighthawks face three of the top four teams in the conference in that stretch, including a huge game Thursday at Western Oregon.

If the Nighthawks can find a way to win two on the road next week, they will return home to host Saint Martin's and Seattle Pacific with a potential GNAC title on the line.

"I love this team," Roth said. "It's awesome. It's been a lot of fun this year, but we've got four more games so the playoffs will come when they come."

They are certainly a little closer thanks to Roth and Megwa's heroics Saturday.
