NAMPA, Idaho – The seven Northwest Nazarene freshmen women's basketball players likely won't ever lead their team in scoring this season.
But the young kids are going to be all right.
After some shaky early season games, the young Nighthawks remained undefeated in Great Northwest Athletic Conference play with a 77-47 victory against Seattle Pacific on Saturday.
"I feel like we are meshing really well as a team," freshman
Nicole Gall said. "We won tonight because of our pace. It feels good and I think we needed it."
Seniors
Marina Valles and
Avery Albrecht and sophomore
Erin Jenkins combined to score 51 of the team's 77 points. And while that figures to be a theme this season, the Nighthawks' success will likely rely on how well the rest of the roster can get up to speed.
"It's just one of those things where we have to play games to learn," NNU coach
Steve Steele said. "In practice, they are looking good and they are shooting a high percentage. The young kids have talent, they just have to understand how to utilize it in the space of a GNAC game – which is high pressure and high speed. It's definitely coming."
Redshirt-freshman
McKenna Emerson had eight points and three steals. Freshman
Haley Hanson had six points and two assists. Gall had four points, two rebounds and two steals. Freshman
Ellie Salisbury had four points and four rebounds. Freshman
Clare Eubanks had five rebounds.
Those aren't huge numbers, but they are important numbers.
"The older kids help us a lot during practice," Hanson said. "They tell us where to go and what to do. I think that helps a lot."
NNU (6-3 overall, 2-0 GNAC) blew Saturday's game open in the second quarter, outscoring Seattle Pacific 28-7.
Valles nearly outscored the entire Falcons team in the first half, heading into the break with 15 points while the Falcons had 18.
"Marina is insane," Gall said. "I don't know how she does what she does and Avery does really athletic things as well. I just have to bow down to them. They are amazing."
Valles and Jenkins each finished one point shy of their career highs in points. Valles added four rebounds, three steals and two blocks. Jenkins had 17 points, three rebounds and three steals.
Albrecht added 15 points, three rebounds and three steals.
"This is probably the most fun I've had on a team," Hanson said. "I think it is all because of the seniors and I think it's because of how awesome and motivating they are and how fun they are to play with. They are amazing."
NNU had 20 steals and forced 32 turnovers, while holding the Falcons to 19-of-48 shooting (39.6 percent) and a 1-of-9 from behind the arc mark.
Seattle Pacific (0-8, 0-2) outscored the Nighthawks 20-15 in the third quarter, but the game was never in doubt.
"Other than the third quarter, I thought we played pretty good defense," Steele said. "We were more consistent tonight and then we were able to be aggressive out of that."
The Nighthawks host College of Idaho at 7 p.m. Saturday in a nonconference game before traveling to Central Washington on Dec. 21 for the final game before the Christmas break.
