Nighthawks reach century mark in rout of Coyotes

NAMPA, Idaho – When you play good defense and play at a high pace on offense you are bound to score a lot of points.

For the fourth time in the last 18 months, the Northwest Nazarene women's basketball team hit the century mark in scoring, defeating College of Idaho 100-72 on Saturday in a nonconference game.

"I was sitting on the bench with Avery (Albrecht) and we looked up and saw we had a 100 and it was like, 'whoa!'" sophomore Erin Jenkins said. "It's really cool to get there, but that is not the goal. The goal is working hard and staying disciplined."

The Nighthawks (7-3 overall) did that in the first half before letting up a bit in the second half. NNU outscored College of Idaho 32-9 in the first quarter and cruised from there.

"Playing defense like we did in the first quarter, we get a lot of easy ones," NNU coach Steve Steele said. "When we are playing quick we get good shots.

"I know we haven't shot it very well this year, but we have kids that really shoot it. It was nice to see us shoot a high percentage. When you play defense at that pace and shoot a high percentage, you are going to score a lot of points."

NNU previously scored more than 100 points against Alaska Anchorage (104 points, 2018), Whitworth (103, 2018) and Montana State Billings (102, 2019).

On Saturday, NNU shot 50 percent from the field (34-of-68) and 74.2 percent from the line (23-31). The Nighthawks also made 9-of-20 from behind the arc after College of Idaho hadn't given up a 3-point basket in three games.

"It was really nice, especially because we got to work on stuff we needed to work on," freshman Clare Eubanks said. "We are getting way better at rebounding and offensive rebounding. At the beginning of the season, we were giving up too many."

The victory was the fifth in a row for NNU after opening 2-3 on the season.

Jenkins finished with a game-high 17 points and four steals. Marina Valles had 15 points, six assists, five rebounds and four steals, while Albrecht added 16 points, five rebounds and four assists.

"I feel like we are finally coming together and understanding how our press rotates and how our offense is flowing when we get into position," Jenkins said. "We've been working our angles and keeping our hands up. As soon as we click on our defense, rotation wise, I feel like when that comes together we'll be unstoppable."

That was certainly the case Saturday as the Nighthawks overwhelmed the NAIA Division II Coyotes, who played the game as an exhibition.

McKenna Emerson added nine points and four steals, Jordan Pinson had nine points, six assists and three steals, Haley Hanson had nine points, while Eubanks and Zoe Wessels had eight points each.

NNU plays at 8 p.m. MST on Saturday at Central Washington in its final game before Christmas break.
