NAMPA, Idaho – The Northwest Nazarene volleyball team was swept by Alaska on Saturday in Great Northwest Athletic Conference action.
The Nanooks won the match 25-19, 25-14, 25-20 to split the season series with the Nighthawks. NNU won in four sets at Alaska earlier this season.
After struggling through the first two sets, NNU (10-11 overall, 6-8 GNAC) turned to its bench and got strong performances from outside hitter
Mattisyn Cope and setter
Mckenzie Lee.
"I thought we could have done a better job with our attitude and our energy to start," NNU coach
Doug English said. "Mattisyn had a really good Set 3. She led us in kills despite only playing one set. That was a nice change to see someone come in and do something that was aggressive and needed for our team."
Cope finished with five kills.
Tayler Markland and
Natalie Sullivan also had five each, while Lee finished with nine assists.
Megan Nelson had 10 assists,
Kayla Sale had 12 digs and
Abbey Blum had 10 digs.
"Fairbanks had a great offensive match and they passed well," English said. "We couldn't stop them on the outside, especially (AveRee Reynolds). We didn't stop anybody."
Reynolds had a match-high 11 kills on just 19 swings. As a team, the Nanooks (11-11, 8-6) hit .363 while the Nighthawks were at .195.
NNU has a quick turnaround, hosting Central Washington at 7 p.m. Tuesday.
