Controversial goal costs Nighthawks in overtime

LACEY, Wash. – For 98 minutes Saturday, the Northwest Nazarene men's soccer team had stood toe-to-toe with the highest scoring team in the Great Northwest Athletic Conference.

But in the first overtime, Saint Martin's scored on a scrum in front of the goal to defeat NNU 3-2.

The goal came off a cross into the box and goalkeeper Sawyer Price appeared to be pushed into the goal, allowing the ball to bounce in.

"That's not why we lost the game but it is when we lost the game," NNU coach Adam Pearce said. "It costs people when officials make calls or don't make calls. It's disappointing."

Defenders Garrison Lee and Lorenzo Valentini scored for the Nighthawks (4-5-0 overall, 0-3-0 GNAC), but the team couldn't get anything else going.

"We've got to be responsible for creating and finishing chances and having the competitive mentality to do so," Pearce said. "We are creating chances and not executing them."

Lee scored in the 27th minute on a golazo into the top corner. Valentini scored in the 69th off of a corner kick by Max Hartley and an assist by Braeden Anderson.

"Credit to those guys for stepping up and giving us a chance to win the game," Pearce said. "There is too much reliance on set pieces and it's great that we are executing them."

Price made one save in his first collegiate start.

While the loss stings, the Nighthawks did bounce back from a 5-2 loss to Seattle Pacific on Thursday.

"I'm proud of the spirit of the team to bounce back and be positive in how they approached the game," Pearce said. "We've got to address some things, conceding eight goals in two games.

"The best way to fix the concession of goals is to score goals. That is where we've got to be better."

NNU hosts nationally ranked Simon Fraser at 7:30 p.m. Thursday.
