Career game for Valles leads NNU women

MONMOUTH, Ore. – Marina Valles scored a career-high 20 points and the Northwest Nazarene women's basketball team remained undefeated with a 90-70 win Saturday at Western Oregon.

Valles, a point guard, was 9-of-11 from the field with a 3-pointer and one free throw made. She added five rebounds, two assists and two steals. Her previous career best was 18 points.

"She was amazing," NNU coach Steve Steele said. "We had four kids in double figures and three kids who were one shot away from double figures."

NNU (12-0 overall, 4-0 GNAC), which is ranked No. 6 in the country in the Women's Basketball Coaches Association poll, pulled ahead in the second quarter thanks to a pair of runs and then rode a strong offensive night to the victory.

"Our offense carried us more than anything today," Steele said. "I don't think we were great overall defensively. We had a couple of spurts where we got two or three steals in a row; we scored 90, but we still gave up 70."

In the second quarter, Western Oregon (4-6, 1-3) took its final lead of the game at 26-25 with 7 minutes, 36 seconds left in the half.

Junior Avery Albrecht then went on a personal 8-0 run, making five free throws and hitting a 3-pointer to make it 33-26 with 4:50 left.

After the Wolves pulled within 35-31 with 3:10 to go in the quarter, Carly Parker hit a 3, Albrecht had a jumper and Danielle Jardine a layup for a 42-31 lead.

"We went overtime here last year and Concordia is always tough," Steele said of the road trip. "I think Western Oregon is the most fundamental team in the conference. They don't beat themselves. That is why it was so close. It never felt like a 20-point win."

The Nighthawks used one more run in the third quarter to blow the game open.

Leading 55-47 with 3:40 left, Valles hit a jumper, McKenna Walker had two free throws, Erin Jenkins a layup and Jordan Pinson a 3-pointer for a 64-49 lead.

Albrecht finished with 17 points, five assists and three rebounds, while Ellie Logan had 10 points and seven rebounds, Walker had 10 points and four rebounds, Pinson had nine points and five assists, Maya Rodgers had eight points and Jenkins had seven.

NNU hosts Seattle Pacific at 5:15 p.m. Thursday as part of a doubleheader with the men's team.
