Pinson, Parker lead No. 5 Nighthawks

NAMPA, Idaho – With the Northwest Nazarene starting five struggling a bit offensively, a pair of backups sparked the offense Thursday.

Carly Parker and Jordan Pinson came off the bench to score in double figures as the No. 5 Nighthawks remained undefeated with an 82-64 victory against Seattle Pacific in Great Northwest Athletic Conference action.

"It is a luxury to have that kind of depth," NNU coach Steve Steele said. "Tonight it was Carly and Jordan and another night it is going to be someone else."

Trailing 7-6 with 4 minutes, 10 seconds remaining in the first quarter, Avery Albrecht hit a 3-pointer. Parker then hit a jumper off an assist by Pinson, Pinson hit a jumper and Parker had a steal and a 3-pointer.

Just like that the Nighthawks (13-0 overall, 5-0 GNAC) led 16-7.

"I try to get defensive stops," Parker said. "If offense comes, it's a bonus for me. A lot of our offense comes from our defense. When we get traps and steals in the press it slows them down and that translates to offense."

The run continued in the second quarter as Marina Valles hit a jumper, Parker hit another 3-pointer and Danielle Jardine completed the 17-2 spurt with a jumper for a 23-9 lead with 8:46 left in the half.

"We were definitely feeding off of each other's energy," Pinson said. "When Carly was hot we were all trying to find her because we knew we were lacking and she could help pick us up."

Pinson tormented the Falcons (4-8, 3-2) defense throughout, finishing with 15 points and four assists. She had two jumpers off of her patented cross over, stop and pop. She also hit a deep 3-pointer that seemed to take the defense by surprise. From then on, the Falcons picked her up defensively at half court.

"When I hit those couple shots every one kept telling me to be aggressive and keep shooting which obviously gave me more confidence," Pinson said.

NNU's 13-game win streak matches last season's streak. The program record for consecutive wins is 23 set by the 1999-00 team, which finished 33-5.

Parker finished with 10 points, while McKenna Walker was the lone starter in double figures with 12 points, six rebounds and four assists.

Avery Albrecht added nine points and four rebounds, Maya Rodgers had eight points and six rebounds off the bench and Danielle Jardine had eight points.

NNU is back in action at 5:15 p.m. Saturday against Saint Martin's, as the Nighthawks look to continue their perfect start.

"It's exciting," Parker said. "It feels great. We all know we have a lot more work to do, though, and we are going to keep grinding every day."
