PORTLAND, Ore. – Playing in front of a large group of family and friends, Oregon native
Avery Albrecht put on a show.
The Northwest Nazarene junior didn't miss a shot until the fourth quarter, scoring a game-high 21 points as the Nighthawks hammered Concordia 84-62 on Thursday in Great Northwest Athletic Conference play.
"Avery had a great game. She really got us started off in the right direction," NNU coach
Steve Steele said. "She was hot right from the get-go which was nice because it takes some pressure off the defense when we aren't getting stops."
Albrecht, who is from La Grande, Ore., hit three 3-pointers in the first four minutes of the game. She finished 5-for-8 from the field, including 4-of-6 from beyond the arc. She also was 7-for-7 from the free-throw line.
The Nighthawks (11-0 overall, 3-0 GNAC), who were ranked No. 6 in the nation in the latest Women's Basketball Coaches Association poll, struggled to slow down Concordia early on. The Cavs (5-6, 0-3) tied the game at 23-23 with 9 minutes, 32 seconds left in the second quarter.
NNU quickly took control, though.
Ellie Logan made a jumper,
Erin Jenkins and
Danielle Jardine had layups, and Albrecht had a layup and a 3-pointer for a 34-23 lead with 6:50 left in the half.
NNU then opened the third quarter on a 7-0 run as Logan had a tip-in, Albrecht hit three free throws and
Raquel Jardine had a layup for a 51-29 lead.
"We adjusted well on defense in the second quarter," Steele said. "The second and the third, we played really good defense. They forced us to make some changes, which is good for us. We have to be able to make those kinds of adjustments."
NNU outscored Concordia 44-18 in the middle two quarters.
Marina Valles had a strong all-around game, finishing with 13 points, six steals, five rebounds and five assists.
Maya Rodgers added 14 points and five rebounds,
Danielle Jardine had 12 points and Jenkins had seven points and nine rebounds.
The Nighthawks play at Western Oregon at 2 p.m. PST on Saturday.
