NNU men's soccer earns tie on road

GRAND JUNCTION, Colo. – Alex Mitrovic scored his first goal of the season, Colin Andersen shined in his first start of the year and the Northwest Nazarene men's soccer team earned a 1-1 tie Thursday against Fort Lewis College.

Mitrovic scored in the 45th minute on a penalty kick pulling NNU (0-2-1) into a 1-1 tie. The Nighthawks defense held up from there, as both teams were scoreless in the second half and both overtimes.

"I'm proud of the guys today, getting a result against a quality Fort Lewis team," NNU coach Joel DeLass said. "It's a great response from us after a disappointing opening weekend."

The Nighthawks lost to Cal State Los Angeles and Westminster last weekend at home, so earning a point on the road at altitude against a tough Rocky Mountain Conference team was a confidence booster.

"The effort the guys showed today was awesome," DeLass said. "We needed a lot of guys to battle through the heat and altitude."

NNU played a man up the final 79 minutes of the game, but could not find the winning goal.

The Nighthawks finished with five shots on goal, while Andersen had five saves for NNU.

NNU faces Colorado Mesa at 12 p.m. Saturday.
