Heninger's serving run caps sweep

NAMPA, Idaho – Cami Heninger had a serving run for the ages Saturday night.

The Northwest Nazarene outside hitter served five consecutive aces and finished with seven overall to move into the school's record books as the Nighthawks swept Saint Martin's in a Great Northwest Athletic Conference match.

"I don't know if I've ever had five in a row," she said. "(Assistant coach) Kinslie (TeKolste) was telling me where to serve the ball and I just went for it."

The run capped off a 25-15, 25-22, 25-8 sweep, the first of the season for NNU. The Nighthawks (4-11 overall, 4-4 GNAC) have won three matches in a row and have reached .500 in conference.

A big part of that was the serving in the third set.

After the Saints (2-12, 0-8) gave the Nighthawks problems in Set 2, senior libero Shayli Siegfreid told the team that they needed to serve harder in the third set.

"She said we need to serve tougher and get them out of system more and ace them down," Heninger said. "I know in the second set I didn't serve as tough as I could have, so in the third set I just went after it."

Heninger kicked off the run after a kill by her made it 17-8. She then hit an ace, forcing a Saint Martin's timeout. Three more aces forced a Saints sub. And then she made it 22-8 with her fifth in a row.

After kills by Abbey Blum and Tayler Markland, Heninger capped the match fittingly with an ace.

"We don't always get five aces in a match," NNU coach Doug English said. "For her to go back there and get five in a row is crazy."

Heninger came into the match with 11 aces on the season. Her seven Saturday ties Lindsey Fryer (2006) and Eki Punimata (2009), who both had seven aces in matches against Saint Martin's as well, for the rally-scoring record. Cheri Dailey holds the overall school record with nine in a side-out scoring match in 1995 and Michelle Phillips had eight in 2000.

The aces weren't the only highlight for the Nighthawks, who host Central Washington at 7 p.m. Tuesday.

Blum and Markland each had eight kills, Kayla Sale added six with no errors and Brooke Foster and Natalie Knauf each had four. Siegfreid had 25 digs, Megan Nelson had 16 assists and Mckenzie Lee had 11.

More importantly, though, the Nighthawks got the sweep.

"It was such a relief," Heninger said. "It was really great. Feels good for my body and my mind to get it done in three."
