Myers leads offensive explosion for NNU women

NAMPA, Idaho – The Northwest Nazarene women's soccer team continued their red-hot start to the season, rolling to a 6-1 victory Saturday against Saint Martin's in both teams' Great Northwest Athletic Conference opener.

Rikki Myers scored twice, Madi Taylor scored her team-leading fifth goal, Maddy Parton and Ashley Parton each scored and Tennyson Young had her first goal of the season.

For Myers it was a gratifying day after she had struggled a bit in the early going of the season, only scoring once in the first five matches after tying for the team-lead last year.

"I was a little bit frustrated," Myers said. "I was focusing this year on appreciating assists and also playing my position well, even if that means you don't get a goal with it. But it was nice to score again."

Saint Martin's (4-2-0 overall, 0-1-0 GNAC) opened the scoring on a goal by Kiersten Madsen in the seventh minute.

Myers quickly tied it off an assist by Taylor in the 10th minute, but then the Nighthawks offense slowed down and struggled to generate much pressure.

"I think a common thing we've been working on in practice is grit," Myers said. "I knew personally, even if you can't change the whole team's grit you can change it for yourself. So I wanted to really work on that and I think that is how I got my first goal."

She followed it up with another goal on a long kick that squeezed into the net just above the leaping goalie's hands.

The Nighthawks (5-0-1, 1-0-0) didn't let up from there as Young scored on a header in the 44th for a 3-1 lead at halftime.

"Our offense stepped up when we were struggling with energy elsewhere on the field," NNU coach Mary Trigg said. "The best thing was our response today."

Maddy Parton opened the second half with a goal off an assist by Myers on a nice breakaway in the 50th minute and then Taylor scored off an assist by Chandler Kauffman on another breakaway in the 53rd minute.

Ashley Parton closed the scoring on a penalty kick in the 66th.

Chloe Sholtz made seven saves in goal to remain unbeaten on the season.

The Nighthawks are back in action Thursday, hosting Concordia at 1:30 p.m. at NNU Field.
