Nighthawks drop another close road game

SAN DIEGO, Calif. – The Northwest Nazarene men's soccer team ended its preseason with another frustrating loss, falling 3-2 in double overtime Saturday to Point Loma Nazarene.

The Nighthawks (0-5-1) let an early 2-1 lead get away, allowing the tying goal on a penalty kick in the 77th minute and the winning goal in the 102nd minute.

"Another game for us to learn lessons and grow up," NNU coach Joel DeLass said. "Frustrating right now that we are making youthful mistakes on both ends of the field. It's another game we could have gotten a result."

Point Loma (3-2-0) struck first with a goal in the 10th minute off a header. The Nighthawks answered with Jake Levine's first goal of the season in the 19th minute on an assist from Sam Ho on a free kick to tie it up.

Skyler Munroe then put NNU on top with a goal off of a cross by Danny Cuevas in the 21st minute.

The score remained 2-1 until the 77th when Tim Siegfried converted from the spot. He also scored the game-winner.

"Hopefully with conference starting up next week we can continue to take a step forward and start getting results," DeLass said.

Jacob Hillyer made five saves in goal, while Alex Mitrovic and Grant Larson each had two shots on goal.

The Nighthawks open Great Northwest Athletic Conference play at 4 p.m. Thursday against Seattle Pacific at NNU Field.
