Nighthawks men's soccer falls in season opener

NAMPA, Idaho – When you are playing a team as good as Cal State Los Angeles you can't make mistakes or you will pay.

The Northwest Nazarene men's soccer team only made three Thursday, but it led to two goals for the Golden Eagles and a 2-0 loss in both teams' season opener at NNU Field.

"I thought for the most part our guys were disciplined throughout," NNU coach Joel DeLass said. "We made three really bad mistakes and were punished for two of them."

The Golden Eagles (1-0-0) scored in the sixth minute and added the final goal in the 78th minute. Cal State Los Angeles is the defending California College Athletics Association champions.

In between, the Nighthawks (0-1-0) had a few chances but couldn't put any of them in the net.

"It was a good test for us," NNU defender Jose Labanino-Ramos said. "The level was a little higher than we had in the preseason. Cal State LA is going to be a good team this year. It was a good game.

"We just have to learn how to fight back as a team and go out there (Saturday) and earn a result."

The Nighthawks had nine corner kicks to just one for the Golden Eagles, but couldn't take advantage.

Jacob Hillyer made four saves in goal, while Rafael Junqueira had NNU's lone shot on frame.

"I didn't think we were good enough on set pieces today," DeLass said. "For us, that is an opportunity to get one in there and we are back in the game."

Westminster defeated Saint Martin's 3-1 earlier in the day. Saint Martin's plays Cal State Los Angeles at 12:30 p.m. Saturday, while NNU hosts Westminster at 5:30 p.m.

NNU must find a way to shake off Thursday's loss and get prepared for the next game.

"I think it is just a mindset of what is next," DeLass said. "We talk about that all the time with the guys. We'll talk about this, clear our heads and it is on to Westminster."
