Nighthawks swept by league-leading Yellowjackets

| By:
Box Score 1 | Box Score 2 NAMPA, Idaho – The Northwest Nazarene University baseball team was swept by GNAC-leading Montana State Billings in a doubleheader Saturday.

The Nighthawks dropped the opener 18-10 and the nightcap 3-2 to the Yellowjackets in a series that was scheduled to be played in Montana but was moved to Nampa because of weather. MSUB played as the home team in the series.

"It's like every time we can sniff victory we do everything we can to not win," NNU coach Rocke Musgraves said. "When you get that close to a win, you go get the win. It's almost like we go the other way.

"We are going to work our butts off this week and try to get them ready for next week."

In the nightcap, NNU took a 2-0 lead in the fourth on back-to-back solo home runs by Casey Sheehan and Justin Folz. Billings tied it with a sacrifice fly and a home run of its own in the fifth and then took the lead for good in the sixth on a two-out double.

Cooper Webster was the hard luck loser for the Nighthawks, allowing three runs on seven hits in 5 2/3 innings pitched.

"I think Cooper gave us a solid effort today," Musgraves said, "but we're better than this. We are losing too many one run ballgames.

"We just turn over the lineup too many times with uncalled for walks and giving away free bases with wild pitches."

NNU pitchers walked 10 batters in the opener, while allowing 18 runs on 17 hits.

The Yellowjackets jumped out to a 9-2 lead in the second before the Nighthawks pulled within 9-5 in the fourth only to give up four more runs in the bottom half.

"We're too good to be playing the way we are right now and that's on me," Musgraves said. "We'll work our butts off and see if we can get on a streak here.

"We are certainly good enough to do it."

NNU has 12 games left in the regular season to try and make up ground on Concordia and Central Washington who have four and five less losses in conference, respectively.

The Nighthawks play at Central Washington next weekend and at Concordia the week after that, before returning home to host Western Oregon.

Folz was 5-for-5 with three runs scored in the opener, Jesse Hilyard was 2-for-4 with a home run, Dylan Cure was 2-for-3 with two runs, two RBIs and two walsk, Bennet Tabaracci was 2-for-4 and Parker Price drove in three runs.

Adam Paulson took the loss, allowing six runs on four hits in one inning.
