Nighthawks show resilience in split

Box Score 1 | Box Score 2 NAMPA, Idaho – Friday's doubleheader had all the makings of a sweep.

The Northwest Nazarene University baseball team had lost a tense, 12-inning game to GNAC-leading Montana State Billings in the opener.

And in the nightcap, the Yellowjackets jumped out to a quick 2-0 lead.

But the Nighthawks showed their resilience, rallying for a 4-2 win behind a key hit from Zach Penrod and seven dominant innings from Greg Casper.

"I would say that was probably the biggest win of the season," Casper said. "We were in some hard situations and we had to prove we could come out on top and I think we did that right there."

In the opener, the benches briefly cleared after a collision at the plate and an apparent ball thrown at an NNU player. The Yellowjackets (20-12 overall, 19-7 GNAC) eventually prevailed 6-5 in 12 innings, walking off on their opponent's field. MSU Billings was playing as the home team Friday as the series was supposed to be played in Montana until weather moved it to Nampa.

"We were down a little bit after getting walked-off on our own field," Penrod said, "but we came back and battled really hard. I liked the way we played.

"We carry the momentum knowing we pissed them off. We punched them in the jaw a little bit with that win. Now we need to carry it over and win two (Saturday)."

In the nightcap, the Nighthawks (13-23, 11-15) trailed 2-0 in the fifth when Justin Folz led off with a single and scored on a single by Coltin Brink and an error by the center fielder. Parker Price tied the game with a groundout.

Two innings later, Price hit a one-out single and after a Casey Sheehan walk, the pair moved up on a throwing error. Penrod then singled through the right side and a shift to give NNU a 4-2 lead.

"I just went up there knowing he was going to give me a fastball to hit and I got one and was able to pull it through the right side," Penrod said.

Casper gave up a leadoff single in the bottom half, but made the lead stand up to earn his third win of the season.

"Last time (I faced them) I threw 85 percent sliders," Casper said, "so I had to find a new pitch and I just started throwing the changeup."

Casper gave up two runs on four hits with four walks and nine strikeouts. Price was 2-for-3 as the Nighthawks had eight singles in the game.

The fireworks in the opener started in the top of the seventh when pinch hitter Cameron Duke reached on a swinging bunt. On the next pitch he was caught in a rundown and eventually ran over the Billings second baseman. Both benches squawked at each other and warnings were handed out.

Things were quiet until the ninth when the Nighthawks rallied with two runs against Billings' ace closer Adam Cox, scoring on a single by Sheehan and tying the game on a wild pitch.

In the top of the 10th, senior Brink singled to center field and catcher Ben Johnson rumbled home from second. The throw from Jalen Garcia beat Johnson, who was forced to run over catcher Andrew Schleusner who held onto the ball for the out.

Schleusner then appeared to throw the ball at Johnson, who laid prone on the ground at home plate.

Third base coach Larry Price was eventually ejected and things calmed down until Billings grabbed the victory on a single by Conner Linebarger.

"After a 12-inning loss and all of the emotions, you look at your ball club and wonder if they can find it deep inside," NNU coach Rocke Musgraves said. "This team is resilient. We may not have the greatest record, but we have some tough kids."
