NNU swept by Western Washington

BELLINGHAM, Wash. – The Northwest Nazarene University softball team was swept Friday by Western Washington in a Great Northwest Athletic Conference doubleheader.

The Nighthawks (8-13 overall, 1-3 GNAC) lost 4-1 and 3-2.

In the second game, Western Washington starter Shearyna Labasan was perfect through 5 2/3 innings before giving up a single to Lauren Bassett and then a two-run home run to Cassidy Fifield that tied the game. Ivy Hommel followed with a double, but was stranded at second.

The Vikings won it on a walk off in the bottom of the seventh, though, as Ca. Richards delivered a two-out single to center to score the winning run.

"Our offense struggled to get going," NNU coach Rich Wagner said. "We hit a lot of balls hard, just right at defenders. We're dealing with some adversity right now, but this team will fight through it."

Rae Young allowed three runs on nine hits with two walks and four strikeouts in 6.2 innings in the circle for the Nighthawks.

In the opener, a pair of errors led to three runs as Jordan Adams gave up just one earned run in six innings.

"Jordan Adams and Rae Young pitched great today," Wagner said. "Both of them deserved the W."

Kylie Orr was 3-for-3 at the plate, while Abigail Otto was 2-for-3, Shelbie Martinez was 2-for-3 with a double and Bassett stole a base and scored a run.

The Nighthawks are back on the road next week playing at Saint Martin's with doubleheaders Friday and Saturday.
