LACEY, Wash. – The Northwest Nazarene University baseball team hadn't won in more than a month.
On Monday, the Nighthawks won three times.
Parker Price singled in
Jesse Hilyard to give NNU a 2-1, 10-inning victory against Saint Martin's in a game that was suspended because of darkness on Saturday. The Nighthawks then swept the regularly-scheduled Great Northwest Athletic Conference doubleheader 6-2 and 15-6.
"I'm proud of how we worked this week," NNU coach
Rocke Musgraves said. "We could have gotten cynical and negative, but we stuck together and overcame an extremely challenging situation."
In the completed game, Greg Casper (1-1) earned the victory in relief striking out 14 in 7 2/3 innings.
In Monday's opener, Adam Paulson was sharp allowing one run in five innings with no walks and seven strikeouts. Blake McFadden (2-0) earned the win in relief, while Zach Penrod pitched two perfect innings for his first save.
Price was 4-for-5 with two runs and an RBI in that game, while Casey Sheehan drove in three and had a two-run double. Hilyard finished 2-for-4 with a triple and a run scored.
In the nightcap, Price again was hot going 2-for-3 with a double, two runs and two RBIs. Dylan Cure was 2-for-4 with three RBIs and Bennett Tabaracci was 2-for-5 with a double and three RBIs.
Kyle Redford was 2-for-3 with three runs scored, an RBI and two walks, and Cobi Johnson (1-0) got the win in relief of
Ross Clevenger.
"We had some timely hitting this weekend," Musgraves said, "but I was most pleased about how our pitchers competed."
The Nighthawks (5-13 overall, 3-5 GNAC) host Concordia at 3 p.m. Friday and 1 p.m. Saturday. Both are doubleheaders.
