CHICO, Calif. – The Northwest Nazarene University baseball team split a nonconference doubleheader with No. 9 Chico State on Friday.
The Nighthawks won the opener 11-3 before falling in the nightcap 3-1.
"I think tonight showed our ballclub that we can play with the best in the country," NNU coach
Rocke Musgraves said. "There were times tonight that we were very good in all facets of the game."
Such as the top of the ninth inning of the opener.
NNU sent 13 batters to the plate, scoring nine runs to rally from a 3-2 deficit.
Kyle Redford reached on an error leading off and after
Jesse Hilyard struck out, Haden Keller singled, Justin Folz hit a run-scoring single and Bennett Tabaracci hit a pinch-hit, two-run double to make it 5-3.
Dylan Cure then walked, Parker Price reached on a bunt single that scored a run, Casey Sheehan flew out for the second out and Zach Penrod hit a run-scoring single to make it 7-3.
Redford then walked, Hilyard was hit by a pitch to score a run, Keller singled in two more and Folz struck out to finally end the inning.
Nine runs, six hits and three pitchers later, NNU had its 11-3 lead.
"Right now, I've got guys being very aggressive which is a good feeling," Musgraves said.
Keller finished 3-of-5 with two RBIs, Hilyard was 2-for-4 with two runs and two RBIs, including a solo home run in the second inning and Redford was 2-for-4.
Adam Paulson (1-1) got the win in relief, allowing one run on three hits in three innings. Starter
Ross Clevenger allowed two runs on one hit in five innings in the no decision, but walked five.
In the nightcap, NNU jumped out to a 1-0 lead in the first inning on a single by Tabaracci scoring Redford. From there, though, the offense couldn't get any more runs across despite banging out 10 hits.
Tabaracci was 2-for-3 and Price was 3-for-4. Ryan Mets (0-2) took the loss, allowing three runs on six hits in three innings. Brennan Patterson and Blake McFadden combined to throw three innings of shutout ball in relief.
"We're still making those cumbersome mistakes that come with lack of experience," Musgraves said. "Our pitching staff continues to throw the ball well."
The two teams meet again for a single game starting at 1 p.m. MST on Saturday.
