LAS VEGAS, Nevada – The Northwest Nazarene University softball team let a two-run lead get away in the seventh inning, eventually losing their opener Saturday at the Desert Stinger Classic.
The Nighthawks lost 5-4 in eight innings to Sonoma State and then lost the nightcap 5-3 to Stanislaus State.
"I feel really good where we are at," NNU coach
Rich Wagner said. "I'm coming home from this weekend feeling positive. We struggled with our offense, which is an area we are really good at – so when our offense clicks we are going to win a lot of games."
In the first game, NNU (2-5 overall) took a 3-1 lead thanks to a two-run home run by
Lisa Sylvester in the fifth inning and a run-scoring single by
Kylie Orr in the sixth inning.
But NNU couldn't make the lead stand up as Sonoma State scored its first run on a double steal in the seventh inning and then tied the game on a single.
In the extra inning, Sonoma State scored on a pair of errors to take a 5-3 lead. The Nighthawks pulled within 5-4 on an RBI groundout by Rae Young, but couldn't come all the way back.
"I felt like they deserved to win one if not both of those games," Wagner said. "That's how well we played. A couple of calls didn't go our way in the first game and that took two runs away from us."
Jordan Adams (1-1) struck out six in 7.1 innings, taking the hard luck loss. Sylvester finished 2-for-4, Brittany Genuardi was 2-for-3 and
Cassidy Fifield was 2-for-4.
In the second game, NNU fell behind 4-0 before putting together a rally. Shelbi Martinez doubled in a run in the fourth and then Genuardi singled in a run with another scoring on an error to make it 4-3. But the Nighthawks couldn't get over the hump.
"Our pitching took a huge step forward today," Wagner said. "It's a hitting conference, so for our pitching to do as well as it did is huge."
Rylee Thomas (1-1) took the loss allowing four runs – three earned – in three innings. Rae Young gave up one unearned run in three innings in relief.
Abigail Otto finished 2-for-3, Fifield was 2-for-4 and
Lauren Bassett was 1-for-3 with a run scored.
The Nighthawks are back in action at the Dixie State Tournament Thursday-Saturday, with doubleheaders each day in St. George, Utah.
