NAMPA, Idaho – Another night, another win.
The Northwest Nazarene University women's basketball won its ninth consecutive game Saturday, holding off Montana State Billings 85-71 in a Great Northwest Athletic Conference game at Johnson Sports Center.
This one appeared it would be a walk in the park, as NNU (18-3 overall, 14-2 GNAC) Â led by 20 at halftime, but a huge third quarter helped Billings (17-9, 10-6) cut the lead to just one in the fourth.
"This year we have really worked on keeping our composure and I never felt a sense of anxiety or anything," senior
Colette Gall said. "We had it. They went on their run and as soon as we stopped that, we were able to put them away."
NNU's seniors Tubbs, Gall and
Kaitlyn Merritt were a big part of that.
Tubbs continued her sensational play, scoring 27 points, grabbing 11 rebounds and dishing out three assists. That follows up a career-high 31-point outburst on Tuesday.
"I don't aim for points or anything like that," Tubbs said. "I think we are executing very well."
The humble Tubbs might not want to take credit, but her teammates, coaches and fans are appreciative of her play.
"She is taking advantage of every opportunity she gets and she is playing amazing right now," Gall said. "She is hitting all these shots and taking them when she is open."
Gall finished with 10 points and six rebounds of her own, while Merritt continued to play solid perimeter defense and offer a steady hand running the point.
"They went out there and led like seniors should lead," NNU coach
Steve Steele said. "They flipped the game around. We got a couple of stops, got some easy buckets and the game changed from there."
GNAC preseason player of the year Alisha Breen was a big part of the Yellowjackets' rally. The post player who has a knack for offensive rebounds, tormented NNU underneath all evening.
Breen only made four field goals, but 11-of-14 from the line and finished with 20 points and 11 rebounds.
"She is an absolute beast," Steele said. "She is impossible to box out, grabs the offensive board and then gets fouled going back up."
Despite Breen's big night, though, the Nighthawks remain in second place just one game behind Alaska Anchorage.
"Anytime we face Billings it is never an easy game," Tubbs said. "We come out with a little chip on our shoulder."
NNU hits the road for two tough matchups at Simon Fraser on Thursday and Western Washington on Saturday.
