NAMPA, Idaho – It was pretty warm in the upper deck at the Johnson Sports Center on Friday night.
Possibly from the big crowd or perhaps from the smoke coming off the nets.
The Northwest Nazarene men's basketball team were red-hot shooting the ball in a 107-90 victory before a large Homecoming crowd.
"We have a great offense," NNU junior Adalberto Diaz said. "There is still some stuff we have to work on, but it shows that we have a lot of people who score on this team."
NNU (1-0 overall) shot a blistering 70 percent from the field in the first half, including 9-of-14 from beyond the arc. The Nighthawks had six players in double figures and another with eight points.
Transfer
Adonis Arms showed why he is expected to be one of the best players in the GNAC this season, finishing with 25 points on 10-of-14 shooting and grabbing six rebounds. He had two big dunks and gave Northwest Christian fits throughout with his length.
"We knew when we got the commitment from him that he was going to be an impact guy and I thought he showed that," NNU coach
Paul Rush said. "He can do it on both ends of the floor. He was able to get to his spots and get a lot of easy looks tonight."
That pretty much went for anyone wearing red.
Diaz and
Jayden Bezzant each had 13 points,
Obi Megwa,
Sam Roth and
James Nelson all added 10 each and
Nikola Prvulj had eight. Megwa added nine assists and four rebounds.
"I think (the offense) comes from defense," Arms said. "It's great starting out 1-0 and letting everyone know we are not here to play around. We are here to handle business."
The Nighthawks handled business from the start, jumping out to an 11-0 lead highlighted by a Bezzant 3-pointer and the two dunks by Arms.
NNU eventually pushed the lead to 23, 67-44 at halftime.
"The high shooting percentage is probably not replicable," Rush said, "but it was a product of getting easy shots at the rim and getting our feet down on open 3s.
"I'll have to see the tape, but I'm pretty sure our player movement was pretty bad. We were setting screens or spacing well. I think we have a lot of room to improve."
University of Oregon transfer Ernest Ugoagu had a team-high 20 points. The Warriors made 13-of-36 3-pointers and 27-of-31 free throws.
The Nighthawks are back in action at 7:07 p.m. Tuesday at the College of Idaho in the first leg of the United Heritage Mayors' Cup.
