Box Score NAMPA, Idaho – The Northwest Nazarene men's soccer team hopes to follow a similar path to their opponents Saturday.
Saint Martin's (9-9-0 overall, 7-5-0 GNAC) won just two games each of the last two seasons, but in the process the Saints had a lot of young players get valuable minutes.
NNU is hoping to follow a similar path. The Nighthawks lost 6-1 to the Saints in Great Northwest Athletic Conference action ending a rough season filled with injuries.
"This game kind of epitomized what we went through this year," NNU coach
Joel DeLass said. "We had opportunities early and we didn't take them; we weren't mature enough to take them. Then we gave up a lot of easy goals."
Senior
Alex Mitrovic scored the Nighthawks' lone goal, playing in his final game. Forward
Logan Wood and goalie
Colin Andersen also suited up for the last time, while seniors
Eric Franco,
Micah Tranch and
Jose Labanino-Ramos were forced to watch from the sidelines because of injuries.
"I just hope the guys have a good offseason and work hard," Mitrovic said. "I know that Joel will work hard to develop them and they can be a good team next year."
Mitrovic finishes his stellar career with 14 goals and five assists, while winning 32 games and becoming the career leader in minutes played.
"It was a nice feeling to score especially because my dad was here and a lot of friends," the forward from Serbia said. "I enjoyed my time here. I love NNU, I love the people and the community. This four years was a pleasure to be here. Now I'm headed to new challenges in life and hopefully they will be successful."
The Nighthawks (3-14-1, 3-9-0) meanwhile will hope all of the minutes played by freshmen
Ty Iannone,
Brandon Parsio,
Landon Butler,
Grant Larson and
Dominic Abdel-Ahad pay off next season and beyond.
"Saint Martin's was a young team with a lot of freshman and look at where they are now," DeLass said of the third-place Saints. "Hopefully we can have a similar offseason."
Andersen made five saves in goal, while the Nighthawks had 10 shots on goal but couldn't find the back of the net more than once.
