BOISE, Idaho – A night after making program history by defeating an NCAA Division I team, Northwest Nazarene couldn't make it two in a row.
The Nighthawks dropped an exhibition 91-75 to Division I Portland State on Saturday at the Vandal Holiday Hoops Classic at CenturyLink Arena in Boise.
On Friday night, NNU defeated Idaho 77-73.
"We had a hard time adjusting," NNU coach
Paul Rush said. "We talked about how we didn't want to give them second-chance points, we didn't want to give them transition points and we didn't want to give them turnovers and that is kind of what we did for the first 10 minutes of the game.
"We came out a little flat and out of sorts."
The Vikings (3-2 overall) jumped out to a 24-5 lead and led by as many as 27 in the first half at 48-21 with 1:18 to go before the break. NNU (5-0) scored the final seven points of the game to get the final under a 20-point spread.
"We talk about consistently improving," Rush said. "I think there were some steps back in the first half. In the second half, I thought we settled down and made some good plays – not turning it over as much and getting back to the way we want to play. We responded in the second half."
Adonis Arms led all scorers with 18 points and six rebounds, while
Jayden Bezzant had 14 points and five rebounds.
Obi Megwa added 11 points and
Zac Furgerson had eight.
The Nighthawks committed 20 turnovers against Portland State's full-court press.
"We played a Cal State LA team that played a very similar style, but not with that kind of athleticism, not with that kind of aggression and intensity and the way those guys played," Rush said. "I'm rooting for that team now and hoping they are going to be one of the best in the Big Sky."
NNU opens Great Northwest Athletic Conference play at 8 p.m. MST on Thursday at Seattle Pacific.
