Balanced scoring helps NNU to road win

SALT LAKE CITY – The Northwest Nazarene women's basketball team showed off its depth Saturday.

Eight players scored at least six points as the Nighthawks (4-0 overall) remained undefeated with a 74-59 win against Westminster College.

"Even though nobody had a ton of points, different people stepped up and scored in small bunches," NNU coach Steve Steele said. "When they took a person away, someone else stepped up."

After Westminster pulled within 52-51 in the fourth quarter, McKenna Walker hit a 3-pointer. Carly Parker then made a free throw and after a Westminster bucket, Parker made back-to-back 3-pointers and Erin Jenkins hit one to make it 65-53 with 3:42 left.

"We hit some big 3-pointers in the fourth quarter to pull away," Steele said, "but we had really balanced scoring on the night, which I liked."

NNU's defense continues to improve, as the Nighthawks held the Griffins to 35.5 percent shooting (22-of-62). NNU only shot 36 percent (27-of-75), but made 13 free throws and seven 3-pointers to pull away in the end.

"We got a lot better from (Friday) night's game to (Saturday)," Steele said. "Sometimes when you win a game ugly, you don't learn from it, but I was really proud that we learned something from (Friday)."

Parker finished with 11 points, Maya Rodgers had 11 points and six rebounds, Danielle Jardine had 11 points and 10 rebounds, Jenkins had nine points and Avery Albrecht had eight.

"(Assistant coach) Kate Cryderman wrote up a really good scouting report," Steele said. "Sometimes early in the year it is hard to prepare for a team, but Kate did a good job of getting our girls ready."

NNU is back in action at 7 p.m. MST on Friday at Azusa Pacific.
