SALT LAKE CITY – The Northwest Nazarene women's basketball team used a big fourth quarter to rally past Colorado Christian 80-75 on Friday at Westminster College.
The Nighthawks (3-0 overall) trailed throughout the game, including by seven entering the fourth. A 6-0 run to open the final period put NNU within striking distance.
Avery Albrecht and
Jordan Pinson then hit back-to-back 3-pointers and
Marina Valles had a layup for a 74-71 lead with 1:25 left.
"We did a better job of getting to the rim and not settling on offense," NNU coach
Steve Steele said of the fourth quarter. "We couldn't hit a shot for three quarters, but I was proud of them because we didn't panic or give up."
Ellie Logan then had a three-point play and two free throws by Albrecht sealed the win against the NCAA Division II team from the Rocky Mountain Athletic Conference.
Logan had a game-high 26 points and eight rebounds. Albrecht added 13 points and six rebounds,
Danielle Jardine had 10 points and Pinson had 10 points and five assists.
"We probably needed that (close game)," Steele said. "The only games we have played haven't been close, win or loss. I'm mostly happy with the way we adjusted and tried to be more disciplined and execute in what we are trying to do in the fourth quarter."
NNU will face Westminster College at 5 p.m. Saturday.
