Three Nighthawks seniors wrap up careers

NAMPA, Idaho – Three Northwest Nazarene volleyball seniors wrapped up their careers Saturday in a four-set loss to Alaska Anchorage.

The Nighthawks (6-21 overall, 6-14 GNAC) dropped their final match of the season 25-21, 25-14, 25-27, 25-14 to end the careers of Shayli Siegfreid, Natalie Knauf and Cami Heninger.

"I had waves of sadness that it is over, but I also felt really grateful," Siegfreid said. "I'm just really happy with the career I've had and the relationships I've made through this whole experience."

In their four years, the Nighthawks advanced to two NCAA Division II national tournaments and won the school's first NCAA tournament match. Siegfreid finishes with a school-record 1,686 digs.

"It was pretty surreal," Knauf said. "Just trying to take it all in and play our hardest and have a great time with our team one last time. Just thinking how far we three seniors have come."

The seniors were a part of 71 wins in their four years, and while their senior season certainly didn't go the way they wanted record wise they still had things to take away from it.

"The people were incredible," Heninger said. "This year would've been terrible if the people weren't so great. So, I really appreciate them."

The seniors figured it wasn't going to be a rough match emotionally when coach Doug English cried in the locker room before the game. That set Heninger and Knauf to crying, though Siegfreid remained ever the stoic one.

"It took me off guard," she said. "For me it validated the fact that he really cares about us as people, so that was really cool to see that."

The Nighthawks played the third-place Sea Wolves (21-7, 14-6) tight in the first set before losing. After a rough second set, they came out with energy in the third set holding on for the 27-25 victory before Anchorage rebounded.

Heninger finished with nine kills, six aces and 11 digs. Siegfreid had 26 digs and Knauf had one kill and three digs. Abbey Blum added 14 kills, Kayla Sale had nine kills and 16 digs, Tayler Markland had seven kills and Brooke Foster had four kills and seven digs. Megan Nelson added 25 assists and Mckenzie Lee had 15.
